The 2024 Allegheny County Immunization Coalition Conference was a resounding success, bringing together experts and professionals for a series of insightful sessions. Key topics included vaccine confidence, immunization coverage, policy and ethical challenges, and the latest updates on RSV in children.

Event Overview

The conference kicked off with a welcome from Patrick Hussey, PharmD, MBA, Chair of the Allegheny County Immunization Coalition (ACIC). The day featured a variety of sessions focused on immunization, vaccine confidence, public health policies, and more.

Jenny Bender, MPH, BSN, RN, CIC, Vice Chair of ACIC. Jenny presented updates on ACIC’s grants, partnerships, and ongoing chapter activities supporting immunization efforts in the region.

Richard Zimmerman, MD, MPH, FAAFP, FIDSAR. Dr. Zimmerman delivered an insightful keynote on vaccine confidence, addressing the latest scientific findings and the role of public policy in increasing vaccine uptake.

Kristen Mertz, MD, MPH & Barbara Nightingale, MD, FAAFP. The session provided an overview of immunization coverage in Allegheny County and the ongoing initiatives led by ACHD to improve vaccination rates.

Michael Deem, PhD. Dr. Deem explored the ethical dilemmas in vaccination programs, discussing mandates, exemptions, and how policy shapes vaccination efforts.

Donald Middleton, MD. Dr. Middleton spoke on the future of adult immunization, emphasizing the growing need for adult vaccines and what healthcare providers should know.

Marian Michaels, MD. Dr. Michaels provided the latest updates on preventing RSV in children, including new recommendations and emerging treatments.

Speaker: Dr. Jean Storm, DO, CMD, CHCQM. Dr. Storm discussed how quality improvement organizations are addressing vaccine hesitancy and fostering confidence in vaccines.

Speaker: Katie Van Tornhout. Katie shared the work of Callie Cares in raising vaccine awareness and providing support for families to navigate vaccine education.

Attendees enjoyed a light breakfast during registration and a lunch break, providing an opportunity to network and explore an exhibitor showcase featuring a variety of immunization resources, services, and tools designed for public health professionals.”
